Edinburgh Taxi Driver Hit With £1,800 Greenway Fines

May 15th, 2012

The new bus lane cameras which have been installed in Edinburgh have caught out a private hire taxi driver who must now pay a whopping £1,800 in fines. The cameras were installed in the city’s Greenways just two weeks ago but already, the same taxi driver was caught illegally using the lane 30 times. According to the Edinburgh City Council, the fines will not be waived because only black cab drivers are allowed to use the bus lanes, not private hire drivers.

There are more than 80 persistent offenders in the Greenways bus lanes with another private hire driver caught 13 times. Every transgression equals a £60 fine so the second driver must pay a total of £780 in fines. Three more drivers have been caught seven times and will face fines of £420 each. Three other drivers were caught six times and will need to pay fines of £360 each while one driver was caught five times and must now pay fines of £300.

Edinburgh’s Greenways can only be used by black cabs and buses as the City Council looks to continue their drive to get locals to use public ransport rather than private cabs. According to a spokesman for the Council, buses are now being used 35% more often than in the 1990s when bus lanes were first introduced. He continued by saying that these lanes can only be a success if a limited number of vehicles are allowed use them.

He continued by saying that private hire cars are not allowed use these lanes because this would reduce the overall effectiveness of the bus lanes. The spokesperson said that private hire cars look like regular cars and if they were allowed to use the lane, regular motorists may follow suit in error. He concluded by saying that while black cab numbers are limited by the Council, the same cannot be said for private hire cars. Allowing them to use the bus lanes may encourage more people to drive private cars, thus clogging up the bus lanes and eliminating their effectiveness.

Edinburgh Zoo

February 16th, 2011

In 1909 the Royal Zoological Society was formed and its vision was for a more open zoological park than the Victorian models where animals could live in something closer to their natural environment. In the summer of 1913 the Scottish National Zoological Park was opened for the public to visit and later that year the park was incorporated by Royal Charter. It wasn’t until 1948 after King George the sixth had visited the park that it was given the privilege of prefixing its name with Royal. To this day the Edinburgh zoo remains the only one in the United Kingdom to have a royal charter.

In the beginning of 1914 Edinburgh zoo began what was to become a long association with penguins, when three king penguins arrived from the Christian Salvesen whaling expedition when their ship docked in Leith. In 1919 Edinburgh zoo was home to the birthing of the first king penguin chick hatched in captivity. The penguins at Edinburgh zoo were the first to be seen anywhere in the world outside of the South Atlantic. In 1950 several of the birds escaped and the zoo keepers turned it into a penguin parade, which was so popular with visitors that it became a now famous permanent feature.

The Highland Wildlife Park, which is a safari park and zoo at Kingussie, thirty miles south of Inverness, was acquired by the society in 1986. Nowadays the zoo and the park together provide what is the closest thing to the animals’ natural habitat in Scotland. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland organises frequent trips for visitors between both of the sites. The zoo has an active breeding and biodiversity programme that is driven by its royal charter. The royal society gives the public opportunities to the public so that they can help support its mission and have introduced a membership club, donations, volunteering and animal adoption.

Nowadays Edinburgh zoo has around a thousand animals, predominantly species of mammals and birds, occupying eighty two acres of parkland. The zoo has two Indian rhinos and some Asiatic lions. Keepers are given areas of responsibility that include groups of animals including, carnivores, penguins and sea lions, primates and koalas, hoof stock, birds, reptiles and amphibians and others. There is what are referred to as touch tables around the zoo where they can see and feel animal artefacts close to. In the grounds there is the Mansion House, which is an old estate house that has a public restaurant, bar and café bistro.

The zoo holds a number of animals that have held military rank including Wojtek a Polish bear that was enlisted in the 22ns Artillery Supply Company and travelled wherever the troops were posted, including the battle of Monte Casino. Wojtek was retired to the zoo when the troops were billeted in Scotland. The society has some ambitious plans for the future of the zoo over the next twenty years and they have funding in place to begin this.

Edinburgh Castle

February 16th, 2011

Edinburgh Castle is built like a fortress at the plug of an extinct volcano. The castle has overlooked the city of Edinburgh since the reign of King David in the twelfth century, although traces of human habitation at the site date back to more than nine centuries before Christ. There was evidence of a castle before the reign of King David, when the construction was referred to as the Maiden’s Castle. In the 16th century historian John Stow maintained that there was a Maiden’s Castle as early as 989 BC – the name Maiden’s Castle was retained until the sixteenth century and the name may have referred to the ancient legend of nine maidens.

Prior to the reign of King David, it was not Edinburgh that was the seat of power in Scotland, but Dunfermline. King David made substantial changes that resulted in a fortress like castle and moved the royal seat of power to Edinburgh, of the original stone buildings, St. Mary’s Chapel at the summit remains. The castle came under English rule for the first time in the 13th Century, when King Edward 1st laid siege and gave rise to the first Scottish War of Independence. The castle was again under siege by the English in the 15th century but the army ran out of supplies and had to retreat. The site of the castle was a residence for royalty until James the sixth of Scotland ascended the throne of England in1603 and became king of both Scotland and England.

During its long history Edinburgh castle has been at the centre of many conflicts, starting with the Scottish wars of independence in the 14th century and carrying on through to 1745 and the Jacobite risings. The castle was in a state of siege many times during its history and in the Lang siege of 1573 the garrison ran out of water. Edinburgh castle became a military base with a large garrison from the end of the seventeenth century and in the 19th century was officially recognised as an historical monument.

Over the years the castle had been used to hold prisoners of war, but the authorities found it was no longer suitable as a prison when 49 prisoners escaped through a hole in the south wall in 1811. The Crown of Scotland was retrieved from the crown room by Sir Walter Scott in 1818 and put on display for the public. Works carried out during the 1880s saw the Argyle Tower and the Great Hall, which had been used as army barracks for years, restored to their intended state. Responsibility for the castle was transferred to the Office of Works in 1905 and troops were finally moved out Redford Barracks in the south west of the city in 1923.

During the First World War the castle was used once more to hold prisoners and held Luftwaffe pilots in the Second World War. Since 1991 the castle has been the responsibility of Historic Scotland and now has the highest level of protection for an ancient monument in Scotland.

Royal Mile

February 16th, 2011

The area known as the Edinburgh Royal Mile is made up of the streets that are known as the Old Town in the city of Edinburgh and is approximately one Scottish mile long. The mile runs west to east from Edinburgh Castle at the top of Castle Rock to Holyrood Abbey. The mile is made up of Edinburgh’s most famous and visited streets and is equalled only by Princes Street in the new town. The area that makes up the mile consists of the following:

Castle Esplanade and Castle Hill

The Esplanade is a troop’s parade ground and is where the Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place. Following on from the Castle Esplanade is Castle Hill and contains Highland St. John’s Church at the south side, and which is now Headquarters for the Edinburgh International Festival Society. Close to the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions on the north side is the Hub, one of the oldest of the city’s tourist attractions. Further down on the same side as the Hub is New College and the Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, where between 1999 and 2004 the Scottish Parliament met.

Lawnmarket

The Lawnmarket, originally the linen market, is full of tourist shops and on the left is Gladstone’s Land, a seventeenth century town house that is owned by the Scottish National Trust. The buildings on the south side have seventeenth century gables. The George the fourth bridge is to the right at the bottom of the Lawnmarket and on the left is Bank Street, which leads to the Mound and to Edinburgh’s New Town. On the south side of the Lawnmarket is a new hotel, which in 20o0/10 won both the carbuncle and best buildings awards.

High Street

The High street is the central focus of the city when the Edinburgh Festival takes place, and the street is filled with buskers, entertainers and tourists. About a third of the way down from the castle enroute to the palace is Parliament Square, and Parliament House is now home to Scotland’s supreme civil court. St. Giles Church is also in the square and by its West Door there is a pattern marked in the road known as the heart of Midlothian, where the former Tolbooth prison stood. Locals spit on the heart as they spit on the memory of the prison.

The central point of the Royal Mile is the Bridges main intersection between Princes Street and the North Bridge. Along the same stretch is John Knox House just before the old limits of the city at St. Mary’s Street and Jeffrey Street where the old fortified gate, Netherbow stood. The mile continues along Canongate and eventually to Abbey Strand, the approach to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the ruins of Holyrood Abbey. At the end of this stretch is the remains of the gatehouse to Holyrood Palace with James the fifths coat of arms set in the wall. Nowadays the Royal Mile contains many shops and cafes and pubs as well as its historical monuments.
