Minicab Driver & Passenger Jailed For Drug Offences

Darren Angol was in a minicab on 10 July this year and was stopped by Territorial Support Group officers. They searched the cab and found a bag containing almost 2.5 kilograms of cocaine with a purity of over 60%. A smaller amount of cocaine (estimated at 55 grams with over 70% purity) was found in the cab’s side door on the driver’s side. The cocaine is believed to have a street value of up to £3 million though estimates vary wildly. Some experts claim that the value of the cocaine is closer to £500,000 but it was more than enough for Angol to be given serious jail time.

Snaresbrook Crown Court had no hesitation in sentencing Angol to 5 years in jail. The driver of the minicab, Perry Law, was also arrested on a charge of possessing Class A drugs with the intention of supplying them. Angol’s home was also searched and a tiny amount of cocaine (14 grams with a purity rating of just 20%) was found. Both men pleaded guilty to the charges. While Angol was given 5 years imprisonment, Law got off relatively lightly with a 12 month sentence which has been suspended for a year.

DC Simon Walsh of the local police force in Hackney said that the quantity of cocaine that was found will undoubtedly be a major blow to drug suppliers in the Hackney region and beyond. He stated that drug dealing tends to lead to other forms of crime and spoke of his delight at removing such a large amount of drugs from the borough. He hopes that this arrest will also send out a clear signal to other criminals that Hackney police will not tolerate drugs in their area and are going all out to stop them from being sold.
