Youths go to court for the death of a takeaway driver

Simon San, aged 40, tragically died on Wednesday the 11th August 2010. His cause of death was due to a severe head injury and he unfortunately lost his life outside his family run takeaway which was in Lochend Avenue located close to the Loch Inn pub. The takeaway that Simon San worked in is called the Yong Hua Garden takeaway.

The police have managed to charge four youth in connection with Simon San’s attack and have consequently appeared in court. Two of the attackers who were a 15 year old and 16 year old boy are not permitted to be named due to legal reasons however have now been charged under culpable homicide. The two attackers, along with another 16 year old and a 14 year old boy were also charged with robbery. Each youth was tried separately in private in front of Sheriff Deirdre McNeill at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Simon San was rushed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with what was described as a brain injury however did not survive the brutal attack. Police then urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could help the investigation and bring Mr San’s attackers to justice.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Blair did however manage to thank those that had already come forward with statements to the police and stated that they had already received a ‘strong public response to our appeals for information’. He then described the death of Simon San as ‘tragic’.

After the death of Simon San police launched a major operation in order to try and catch his attackers. Simon’s family were obviously left devastated by their loss and via the Lothian and Borders Police spoke of how Mr San would never ‘resort to violence’. They also lovingly described Simon as San as a ‘shy, hard working and non indulgent man’.

Simon San was attacked at around 10pm by the Edinburgh based teenagers who did not make any plea or declaration whilst they were held in custody over the attack. Simon San is thought to be Vietnamese however no information released has pointed to a racial attack therefore his family are currently left wondering why the unnamed attackers did such a horrible thing. More information is yet to be revealed on the case however with so much public attention surrounding it many are waiting patiently to find out what will happened to those that brutally attacked such a nice man.
